    In order to improve the representation of the Scheduled Caste candidates in various services "Ambedkar Institute of Careers and Courses" was set up in 1987 at Mohali by the Department of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, Punjab. At present free coaching facilities are provided under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Coaching and Allied Assistance for weaker sections, including Scheduled Castes,Other Backward Classes and Minorities from the State of Punjab who wish to appear for various competitive examinations such as IAS, PCS, Bank PO, AAO(LIC),Medical College Entrance Examination etc.The income limit for admission to this institute under the scheme is Rs. 1.00 lakh p.a.. The outstation students have been provided stipend of Rs. 700/- per month and local students Rs. 225/- per month for Group A services. For Group B services and entrance examinations, the stipend is Rs 375/- and Rs 125/- for outstation and local students respectively, provided they fulfil the requirement of 75% attendance in each class.     The coaching institute has its own building constructed on 1.61 acre of land in Phase 3 B-2,S.A.S.Nagar Mohali. Besides the main administrative block and classrooms, the institute has a spacious library with over 9000 books and an excellent reference section easily accessible to the students. Every year books worth Rs.1.00 lakh are procured for the library. The institute also has a big seminar room and a committee room where lectures by eminent academicians are organised to raise horizons of the students. There are separate hostels for boys and girls with hostel warden's residence attached. In boys hostel, there are 30 cubicles and 4 dormitories and in girls hostel, there are 24 cubicles and 4 dormitories. All the rooms are fully furnished. A contributory mess is run by the students committee selected by the students under the supervision of hostel wardens. The entire infrastructure for the mess is provided by the Institute.

    The main goal of the coaching programme is to prepare candidates from SC, BC and Minority categories with a view to increase their representation in Govt. jobs. It is not only the academics where the institute focuses on, but the stress is on building the overall personality of the students to face the stiff competition and do big in life. The students are enrolled by the dully constituted selection committee for any of the above mentioned coaching programmes based on their performance in the entrance test conducted by the institute.
